Electrical Heat Tracing Installation, Quality Control & Commissioning

We provide field services for electrical heat tracing systems used to protect pipelines, tanks, valves and process equipment against freezing and maintain required process temperatures. Our services support oil and gas, petrochemical, refinery, power, chemical, water treatment and other industrial projects through installation, quality control, pre-commissioning and commissioning.

We work against approved designs, heat tracing isometrics, circuit schedules, client specifications and manufacturer instructions. By checking installation against the design, we help prepare systems for operation.

1. OUR SERVICE SCOPE

Depending on project requirements, our scope may include:

- Self-regulating heating cables.

- Constant-wattage heating cables.

- Series-resistance heating cables.

- Mineral-insulated — MI heating cables and associated cold lead connections.

- Power connection, splice, branch and end termination kits.

- Junction boxes, power distribution panels and heat tracing control panels.

- Thermostats, temperature controllers, limiters and monitoring systems.

- RTD/Pt100 sensors, other specified temperature sensors and their connections.

- Heating applications on pipes, tanks, valves, flanges, instrument lines and equipment.

- Ex heating circuits and connection equipment for hazardous areas.

Our services focus on electrical heat tracing. Steam tracing is assessed as a separately defined mechanical scope.

2. PRE-INSTALLATION AND MATERIAL CHECKS

- Comparison of cable type, power rating, operating voltage, temperature limits and circuit details against the design.

- Receiving inspection for physical damage, product codes, quantities, identification and certificates.

- Verification of compatibility between heating cables, connection kits, terminations and controls.

- Field review of pipe routes, isometrics, circuit lengths and power supply locations.

- Inspection of pipe surfaces, coating condition, installation access and mechanical completion status.

- Suitable storage, handling and protection before installation.

- Pre-installation testing using methods appropriate to the cable type, with baseline results recorded.

3. HEAT TRACING INSTALLATION SERVICES

We install and secure heating cables on pipes and equipment and complete electrical connections in accordance with manufacturer instructions.

Typical activities include:

- Straight or spiral cable installation as specified by the approved design.

- Installation of specified additional heating cable allowances at valves, flanges, pumps and supports.

- Compliance with minimum bending radii, permitted circuit lengths and installation temperature limits.

- Use of approved fixing tapes, fasteners and heat transfer foil where required.

- Protection against sharp edges, excessive pulling, crushing and mechanical damage.

- Installation of junction boxes, power connections, splices, branches and end terminations.

- Cold lead and power cable connections, cable glands, terminals and circuit identification.

- Connection of metallic braids or sheaths to the specified protective earthing system.

- Suitable insulation entry fittings and mechanical protection at insulation penetrations.

Field cutting, overlapping and crossing permissions depend on cable type and manufacturer approval. A single installation method does not apply to all products. Length changes, splices or repairs to MI and series-resistance systems are performed only using approved methods.

4. TEMPERATURE CONTROL, PANELS AND FIELD INTERFACES

- Installation and connection checks for power distribution and control panels.

- Inspection of thermostats, controllers, contactors, relays, circuit breakers and specified residual-current/earth-fault protective devices.

- Installation of control and limiting sensors against approved location details.

- Verification of sensor cable routing, connections and screening arrangements.

- Matching circuit identification with panel schedules and field labels.

- Testing of alarm, status and control interfaces with DCS, PLC, SCADA or central monitoring systems.

Sensor position, proximity to the heating cable and fixing method are determined by the system control approach. The functions of control sensors and independent limiting sensors are verified against the approved design.

5. QUALITY CONTROL AND INSPECTION — QA/QC

We prepare inspection records against project ITPs and checklists to support installation quality control.

Inspection points include:

- Verification of cable type, circuit number, routing and installed length against the design.

- Examination of cable condition, fixing, splice and termination workmanship.

- Checks of power connections, cable glands, terminals and earthing.

- Verification of pipe cable placement, equipment allowances and mechanical protection.

- Inspection of junction box covers, seals, unused entries and sealing arrangements.

- Examination of sensor locations and control circuits.

- Review of Ex markings, equipment certificates and special conditions of use in hazardous areas.

- Inspections before and after thermal insulation, with concealed work recorded.

- Coordinated checks of insulation, cladding, weather protection and warning labels with the relevant disciplines.

- Preparation of RFIs, punch lists, NCRs, corrective action and reinspection records.

6. ELECTRICAL TESTING AND PRE-COMMISSIONING

Testing follows the cable type, manufacturer requirements and approved procedures. Activities may include:

- Insulation resistance testing before installation, after installation and after thermal insulation.

- Comparison of results before energisation and assessment of indications of damage.

- Verification of protective conductor, metallic braid or sheath continuity.

- Electrical continuity and resistance measurements appropriate to the cable type.

- Connection, polarity and terminal verification for power and control cables.

- Comparison of supply voltage and protective device details against the design.

- Verification of valid calibration records for test equipment.

Insulation test voltages and acceptance criteria are selected for the product and project. Sensitive controllers and electronics are disconnected or protected as instructed by the manufacturer. As self-regulating cable resistance and current depend on temperature, readings are assessed against suitable reference conditions.

7. COMMISSIONING AND FUNCTIONAL TESTING

- Mechanical Completion and field readiness checks before energisation.

- Verification of permits, isolations, panel readiness and circuit readiness.

- Controlled energisation under approved conditions.

- Recording of start-up and steady-state currents, supply voltage and circuit behaviour.

- Comparison of temperature setpoints, alarm thresholds and limiter settings against approved values.

- Verification of sensor readings and controller indications.

- Functional testing of thermostat, controller and contactor switching.

- Verification of specified high/low temperature, sensor fault and earth-fault alarms using suitable test methods.

- Checks of independent high-temperature limiter trip and reset functions.

- Testing of local/remote monitoring and central control system interfaces.

- Temperature measurements at suitable accessible locations; thermal imaging where included in the scope.

- Rectification, retesting and operational handover checks.

Energisation conditions account for insulation status, process conditions and manufacturer limits. Current flow alone does not demonstrate that a circuit achieves the design temperature. Temperature performance is assessed under defined operating and test conditions.

8. HAZARDOUS AREA APPLICATIONS

We review the combined suitability of heating cables, connection kits, boxes and control equipment in areas where explosive gas or vapour atmospheres may occur. Ex certificates, ambient and exposure temperatures, temperature class, maximum surface temperature and required limiting arrangements are checked against the approved design.

Field changes that could affect design or certificate conditions are subject to technical approval and change management. Installation and commissioning support do not constitute product certification or independent design approval.

9. DOCUMENTATION AND HANDOVER

Depending on the project scope, deliverables may include:

- Heat tracing circuit schedules and cable check sheets.

- Material receiving, installation and quality inspection records.

- Insulation resistance, continuity and appropriate resistance test reports.

- Current, voltage and temperature verification records.

- Controller settings, alarm, trip and functional test sheets.

- Ex inspection records and certificate review checklists.

- Punch lists, NCR close-outs and field input to red-line/as-built documentation.

- Mechanical Completion, pre-commissioning and commissioning dossiers.
